A few weeks ago, I took a couple of days off, and travelled to Hokkaido for the snow festival. From various senpai ALTs, I had heard that the snow in Ishikawa could be formidable, so I was a little disappointed that very little fell here this winter. In the UK, because of the heavy rains in winter, settled snow is very rare outside of Scotland.
However, when I reached Hokkaido, it was hard to believe I was still in the same country as Okinawa! Snow piled up deeply wherever I looked, and outside all the towns the land was crowded with dense snowy woods.
Of course, when in Hokkaido, you’ve got to try the local food! As an Englishman, of course I love butter, potatoes and lamb, so Hokkaido felt like a home away from home! I also really liked the soup curry, and had some sukiyaki in Hakodate that really left me speechless. Now I can see why the students who went on the school trip there were so excited! I can’t wait to go back!
