高校 – Sixth Form

投稿日時: 2019/11/20 m1

For the past two weeks, Tiffany and I have been doing 1-on-1 conversation practice with the first year students. We had a lot of fun, and it was very interesting getting to chat with students, rather than standing at the front of the class.

A few conversations reminded me of my own time in 高校. In the UK, this is often referred to as Sixth Form, and it’s very different from Japan.

That’s what I looked like in Sixth Form. Uniform rules mostly don’t exist. Additionally, the timetables are a lot more flexible. Because the entire two years of Sixth Form are focused on entering University, the number of subjects students can take are limited to 4, and as students are expected to behave like adults, and take responsibility for their own learning and actions, attendance is not compulsory. There are also no P.E. classes, or sports teams – students who want to play sports can either choose to study Sport Science, or, like me, join a sports club privately.

Rules are far less strict – most sixth forms will have a smoking area for students, and a student’s actions outside of the classroom are of no concern to teachers. However, students aren’t completely wild. Every night at minimum 4 hours of homework is set, and failure to complete it can result in a student being expelled. Despite this, my friends and I also spent a lot of our free time making music, skateboarding and playing video games. Not long after this photo was taken, I would discover a song called Linda Linda, and hear the Japanese language for the first time.
